What is MLA Format?
The MLA format is assigned to students following courses in the liberal arts and humanities. MLA stands for Modern Language Association. Basic MLA Features
As with the APA style essay, the MLA essay also has some basic features. Understanding and remembering these basic features is necessary when learning how to do MLA essays.
• The paper you use for the essay should be 8.5” x 11”.
• The font is Times Roman and the size is 12.
• The text should be double spaced, and should contain 1” margins on all four sides.
• New paragraphs should be indented 1½” from the left margin and should contain one space after every punctuation.
• Page numbers should appear on the top right-hand corner of the papers.
The MLA style essay does not require a title page. However, this is at the discretion of your teacher. All you have to do is type the name, teacher’s name, course followed and the date on the top left-hand corner of the first page. Each section should be double-spaced and title too should be double-spaced and centred on the first page. Remember to capitalize every first letter of your title. No italics or underlining of the title is necessary. Begin your essay two spaces below the title and always have a running header beginning at the first page on the right-side corner with a space and the page number.
All external sources used HAS to be cited in the proper manner within the text. This is, by far, the most important element in your essay. For example, if your source is an author named “Sanders” the name should be included within brackets followed by the page number. E.g: (Sanders 260). A more detailed description should be recorded in the Work Cited page, with the author’s name, publication name, and place of publication and year of publication.
